Concept

The Promotion/Relegation League is a seasonal group of round-robin Warlight tournaments, always on the classic “strategic middle earth” map and settings. Players are grouped into small groups (6 on average). At the end of each season, the top players of each group are promoted to the next group above. Bottom players are relegated to the next group below. Middle players remain in the same group.

The league is meant to appeal to players who want to see, over the course of several seasons, where their natural level of competition might take them. For new, skilled participants, this means patience in getting to the levels where they will be challenged. Hopefully, that is part of the fun. The idea is to see how quickly you can progress, how long you can stay high, or how long it takes to stop a skid.

Rules

The league is run with a balance of predictability and flexibility. Final decisions are made by the league administrator (currently Chokecherry) with an attempt to consider input of league players.

Currently, the model is to typically have the top two promote and the bottom two relegate but there are exceptions. Where there is default – a player becoming inactive or asking to bow out of the league – there can be more promotions to fill in the vacancy. Where this happens in several groups there can be a lot of shuffling. The principle, though, is to usually have at least one player from each group relegated. Several retirements mean fewer relegations and more super-promotions to keep the groups filled.

Any player inactive in the last three games of any tournament is deemed to be out of the league and can only return as a new player in an expansion or bottom group.

Placements in a round-robin are determined by number of wins. In the event of a tie, placements are determined by head-to-head results among the tied. Occasionally, there are loops of ties that cannot be resolved by the head-to-head rule. A tie-breaking tournament then takes place unless all the players involved agree to otherwise settle the tie. Where a tie-breaking tournament would delay the league too much, average turn-speed is rewarded to resolve such ties.

Anyone can join the league, members and non-members alike, simply by request in the most recent “Promotion/Relegation League” forum thread. New players begin in the bottom group or in an expansion group. Promotions from expansion groups depend on numbers within the new groups.

Before the beginning of each season, a summary of the movements will be announced to allow for questions or corrections. The league works most smoothly if those who wish to bow out of it let the administrator know before the new season begins instead of simply declining to play after the groups have been determined and tournaments begun.

The history of the last season can be reviewed from links in the season 6 thread: http://warlight.net/Forum/Thread?ThreadID=4945

If there is space in Season 7 I would like to join, if not Season 8 I will join :) Only as long as it stays on strategic 1v1, because I see in the last thread people were discussing changing it, which I do not like much.

Hedja - to F/G but it all depends on retirements from the league, so details are revealed after the season. The general rule is 2promotions, 2relegations from each group, but because some people quit the league, there are usually more promotions + some superpromotions and less relegations. I believe it was widely discussed in 5th or 6th season's thread..

Malamute's got that right - and here is a possible format for promotions and relegations for season 8.

Is it time to consolidate groups slightly?

The league has gradually grown over the seasons. Each time, there are a few drop-outs, but there usually seem to be more new players than lost ones. All groups are underway in Season 7 and only two players failed to join (groups F and G have 5 each). There are a total of 55 players in all.

Thinking ahead, I am wondering if it might be time, for season 8, to shoot for 8 groups of 7 rather than 9 groups of 6. If so, next season would look like this (assuming no drop-outs; capital letters represent Season 8 Groups, small letters represent season 7 origin):

A - aaaabbc
B - aabbbcd
C - bcccdde
D - cdddeef
E - eeeffgg
F - ffgggh1h2
G - h1h1h1h1h2h2h2
H - h1h1h1h2h2h2,new

This would mean in subsequent seasons that you would typically see two promoted, two relegated and three remain in each group. Interested in players' views.

I'm good with groups of 7, I think there's now enough depth in the league for that to be competitive.

I agree with consolidation. Larger groups would also give it a bit more variety (especially at the top groups). It also makes the seasons last slightly longer, which I like.

No. That's not how it works. Placings are determined by win/loss records. These three all had an identical record (3-2). Such ties are settled by head-to-head results. In this case they each went 1 and 1 against each other - so it isn't resolved. Results against other players aren't relevant.

This is the same formula used by the program. When a three-way loop like this happens, they are placed in random order.

I won against warlightvet, so:
Malamute > Warlightvet
but I got booted against Awesomeguy, so:
Awesomeguy > Malamute,
but he lost to wfv, so:
Warlightvet > Awesomeguy

we all had only 2 losses.
so this truel is somewhat looped - which is why it's a draw determined by warlight engine with RANDOM order as warlight does not recognize draw as a result at any stage.
