i agree that newbie is a top notch player, but i don't think that there is a definite BEST 1v1 player. Everyone has their own game style that suits them best. I would say that there is a top tier that a lot of players fall under. I got a list of a top ten chunk that i tend to have trouble beating. Just scroll through all the 1v1 tournaments and you'll see familiar names that get to the top most everytime. Those guys know how to play well.

Experience also helps a lot in a player's skill. You get to recognize patterns easier.

Experience matters a lot. All the best players have been members since 2008.

I'm definitly not the best.

However like Nebula said there's a list of people that are among the top 10 that it's pretty much a toss-up anytime we play.

Gaia
Troll
Randy
Mor
etc etc etc

Ruthless, having inflated his stats before, keeps a different count of your wins/losses with him I think. One which probably favors him more.
If you want some 1on1 advice I'll pass on the last bit of 1on1 advice I got in a 1on1 game, from Mor. 'Deception as to your skill is important in war'
Good advice don't you think Ruthless?

i thrive off of other's fear, thats just how ruthless works. and Al, you're record looks impressive, but how many of those wins are against elite players? I'm sure all of those open games are picking up a bunch of noobs

and yes i just referred myself in the third person.

doushi - yeah, i'd say thats decent advice...
PS - we should play 1v1 some time...its been awhile

1v1 is a crapshoot for the top 20 people when playing eachother. However some people can 'pad' their stats by playing a bunch of noobs. My 1v1 percentage was well over 90%, but then I created a bunch of 1v1 round robin tournements with every warlight player with a 1v1 record of 80% or greater... needless to say it dropped a bit since then.
If I had to pick a single best player i'd say mor

Ruthless, for some reason, your record may not show it... but I swear you can read my mind when we play. You give me more trouble than most... :)

From my observations Alpacino isn't that great of a 1vs1 player. Against top players he loses most of the time. Against good players he's around 50/50 or so, but this is only on 'his' settings which he's played hundreds of times. Anytime someone decent plays him on settings he isn't familiar with, like using random warlords, he loses most of the time. His 1on1 experience isn't of much use as it's primarily a means to maximize efficiency/odds on a single setup and he finds himself losing frequently with alternate settings and then challenging people to play them on 'his map' to try to redeem himself. I would say his biggest weakness appears to be his lack of adaptability to new situations.

well when the open seats started and you were still JRach, i got demolished by you. I just started to look at the history of all my loses to the people with really good stats. I decided to stick with your type of strategy, and when i started using it with the advice you gave me in one game, i started beating people more.

Whenever we played, i would look about 3 or 4 of the most recent games and study them. Then i realized, that most of all the elite players probably study moves because after basic strategy, its just how you play the player.

doushi, that analysis of Alpacino is pretty much exactly what i was thinking. I can beat him in random warlords pretty much everytime, but when we play his settings, i feel handicapped cause he LITERALLY has played it a hundred times.

The hardest thing for me now, and what i'm working on, is to play better in bigger games, like 5-8 FFAs. Cause frankly, i suck in those. I lose about 80% of the time.

I would like to see a round robin 1v1 tourny with just the default settings with manual distribution and invite the top 20 players in the creator's mind, maybe even an arbitrary person. Set the boot time to the highest cause most of the best players either have a lot of actual work to do/don't have too much time to play. That would be fun to see, and it could act as a ladder to see who really is the best.

Well I disagree on using the default settings for a tournament full of 'top' players, but that is the general idea that has been had as Newbie and Troll both tried to do it around the same time:
http://www.warlight.net/App.aspx?TournamentID=43
http://www.warlight.net/App.aspx?TournamentID=48

Newbie's never got off the ground and Troll's is stalled. I should note that Newbie didn't invite me to his, at the time he felt I was inadequate to get over his entry bar, someone else forwarded me an invite to his. He may still think that. I think he primarily based it on win percentage of two player games which doesn't seem fair, but it's a metric he chose to try to find worthy adversaries.

It's hard to truly qualify a "best" 1v1 player. You can go by percentages but that's not really accurate. You can go by tourney games won with the "default" settings but that only indicates top players of a certain type of game.

Random distribution settings may incorporate too much luck into the equation, but if you start with say a close to full warlords distribution, that could be minimized.

Boot times can be unlimited, which favors players with a more 'intellectual' bent, or they can be 1 minute, which would favor the intuitive or quick-thinking crowd.
Actually, it would be interesting to make a 1v1 tourney with fast boot times, but players would have to set aside an agreed upon time to play it out which could be difficult.

Perhaps there could be several 1v1 ladder set ups, with different game settings. Whoever has the most top rungs wins the "best 1v1 player" prize :)

Any player is beatable, but Doushi is currently winning Troll's tourney above, making him one of the best. I can hardly wait for the Newbie/Doushibag match, though! ;)

yeah, i just looked at that tourny, and doushi's doing really good in it. I too want to watch that match.

I like the idea of several 1v1 ladder tournaments cause some people are better at some things than others. It would almost be like a decathlon of game settings.

if these tournaments are made, I would like to participate if i'm good enough to make the cut.

That sounds like a fun idea. I think if we were to do it we should discuss the full setup and rules and players and make sure everyone is game before starting it.

Well Troll's Round Robin only had 12 players. I think Round Robins have a limit of 20 players. So I think it would be limited to 20 players for the whole thing if we were to do it. I think we'd have to list all the potential players and then narrow it to 20 if necessary.
