i never realized how many people really waste their life correcting spelling on warlight. does anyone else think its nerdy or am i alone
It's not nerdy to care about grammar. The only way we, in an online community, have to communicate is through writing. If you write in a way that takes immense effort to understand, a lot of people are not going to bother to understand it. Even more people will assume that what you write is neither important nor intelligent despite how brilliant it may or may not be. You'll lose credibility and if you eventually make an effort to put on tournaments or create cool things in the community, you'll find not many people are interested in what you're doing. You may feel marganalized, singled out and ignored as a result.

You don't have to care about grammar if you don't want, but you will have to deal with the consequences.

"I declare only the comments of Richard Sharpe, [20], and BostonPhoenix on grammar are valid."

It should read "to be" instead of "are", or it should say "I declare that only [...]". I also think that "on grammar" is superfluous. Vapor, "caps" is perfectly cromulent and a common abbreviation, and you correct the phrase "you guys" in the first sentence, but leave the same phrase intact later on. I don't think "you guys" is gramatically incorrect.

You also change "I wouldn't put" to "I wouldn't bother putting". I don't know why you think "I wouldn't put" lacks cromulence, and your correction changes the semantics of the phrase. I wouldn't put a cat in a microwave, and that means something different than "I wouldn't bother putting a cat in a microwave".

russel thank you for the first tangent mature reply to thsi thread that was amazing. now i belive you are half right about that. now this is game where you have a time limit in most moves and while you coordinating with teamates i dont see the importance of spelling correctly as well as with the not so important posts made for recreation in the genral forum. for example someone saying that their clan is setting up a 3v3 with another clan could say just that their is no true reason for the capitol and period and i think its so hilariously funny for the people who wright a huge paragragh prosecuting you for having bad grammar and thats exactly what Boston Pheonix had done i recieved a 1v1 challenge with a huge pargraph trying to et back on me for many typos to a thread that didnt even pertain to him.

Russel, thank you for the first tangent mature reply to this thread, that was amazing.

Now I believe you are half right about that. Now this is a game where you have a time limit in most moves. And because you are coordinating with teammates I don't see the importance of spelling correctly as well as with the not so important posts made for recreation in the general forum.
For example: someone saying that their clan is setting up a 3v3 with another clan could mean simply that there is no true reason for the capital and period. I think it's so hilarious for the people who write a huge paragraph prosecuting you for having bad grammar, and thats exactly what Boston Pheonix has done. I recieved a 1v1 challenge with a huge pargraph trying to get back on me for the many typos to a thread that didnt even pertain to him.

Please note that I'm not a native speaker, so it may not be fluent, but at least the grammar and spelling are (mostly) correct.

Moros, looks good except for the punctuation; You are missing some commas and semicolons. :)

In Dutch you never place a comma before 'and', is that different in English?
If yes: woohoo! I've just learned something new about the English language, now people will understand me better!

Never saw anything wrong with it, eh? Somehow I doubt your opponents in 3v3 games where you occupy two seats would see something wrong with it...

Moros, yes, you can place a comma before "and", just like in German, given that a full sentence follows.

In this case, however, I was more referring to parts like these: "...thank you for the tangent, mature response..."; "Now, I believe...", and such.

The Chinese have different grammatical structures than Americans. I can't think of one off the top of my head, but I can give an example later on... (I think that is called an ellipse).

Awesome, they certainly do. Not speaking Chinese well, I can't say all of them, but they have no word for "he" or "she". This causes immense amusement to me, as when one of my students is talking about a male classmate, and calls him "her".

No "he" nor "she"? Interesting. What do they use instead? Just the name or do they refer to someone as an "it"?

You writing properly costs one person a few seconds. Your team mates having to decode some illegible text costs all of them time. Not to mention what happens when they misunderstand you because they decoded your writing incorrectly.
In the grand scheme of things, writing properly (and no, I don't mean flawless, but far better than you've been doing so far) actually saves time.

In Dutch you never place a comma before 'and', is that different in English?
Actually, that's not true... While Dutch indeed doesn't place a comma before the last item in an enumeration ("a, b and c"), there are other uses of commas and in some cases a comma right before "en" is not only allowed, it's required: http://www.onzetaal.nl/taaladvies/advies/komma-voor-en (I'm reasonably sure this marks the first link to onzetaal.nl ("ourlanguage.nl") on the WL forum ;) ).
By the way, English does indeed differ here; to the best of my knowledge, a comma between the second-to-last item of an enumeration and (the "and" before) the last one is either allowed, tolerated or required (no idea which, go ask a native speaker :p ), but it's definitely not "wrong".

I think that is called an ellipse
Nope, that's a "flattened circle". Three dots denoting an omission are called an "ellipsis" (the plural of "ellipse" is "ellipses", pronounced differently..., I think).

I really dont see why people make such a big deal about grammar. As long as people get the main idea its fine. Especially for something as informal as this forum
