AI surrendering after a few turns: 5/29/2023 15:31:38

I was recently in a game with the following settings:
- Booted and surrendered players turn into AIs
- AIs DON'T surrender when one human remains

Here's the link to the game: https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=34455880

As you can see, after turn 8 there was only 1 human left. Since the setting "AIs surrender when one human remains" was turned off, the game continued... until turn 13, when the AI suddenly surrendered. Why did AI surrender? Is it a bug or I just don't understand something?

Human might have taken back control then surrendered? Can’t think of any other way of how that’s possible

@DanWL not really, even if he did, he would become AI again. And if you check the chat, even Martin Straka (whose AI surrendered) was surprised by this, so it's definitely not the case.

If no humans remain, all ais except one will surrender. The ai won't play against itself in MultiPlayer

that means mattloup booted and got AI as well in turn 13. If you click his name it says (AI was: matloup)

it would actually be better if the ai played it out so these unfair wins wouldn't happen

▶ To my knowledge, AI's play incredibly fast. When multiple AI's play simultaneously (especially in big maps), it harms the game. Fizzer can of course mitigate it by giving a cooldown to AI or just letting the AI with most army/income/territory win automatically.

▶ I personally think giving AI cooldown and letting them fight is the better option. I know it defeats the purpose of Muti-Player, but it would be much more dynamic and interesting to watch

the problem with letting the AI play is the amount of resources it takes. and if you have a game that ends in a draw (no one has income for example) the AIs will play indefinitely...

▶ Yea, that's another problem. This can also be solved through adding a small limitation (i,e. forcing AI's to surrender if they play 100 turns without a player)

It could be solved like seasonal ladder games are ended when the season ends but games are still ongoing. A formula decides the winner. I think its compared: Controlled armies + 2× Income. And if its even, then it still can be randomly decided.

But that is up to Fizzer if this is worth it to be adjusted

Yeah, it would be better if it worked like that, instead of deciding the winner randomly.

Interesting... so if you're losing a multiplayer game vs an AI, your best move is to turn into AI yourself and hope for a good coinflip... hmm...

Of course the core problem in this particular example is that the tournament creator is a dumbass and didn't check the "AI surrender if one player remains" checkbox.

ah that makes sense, tho it would be nice if such events actually showed in the game history @Fizzer

Player mattloup got booted after not taking their turn for 1 day, they will now be replaced by an AI.

Only AI players remaining, picking random winner

leaving this box unchecked adds a lot to the strategic value of the gameplay.
