Hello!

A clan member of mine and I both tried to make tournaments recently.

Mine used an FFA template, and his used a 2 vs 2 format.

However, both turned into a series of 1 on 1 games.

Is there a way to make a tournament that is a sequence of FFA games? If so, how?

How does the tournament format work? We both failed at this, apparently, and I'm not sure how to rectify that.

When creating a tournament, there doesn't seem to be any moment where it asks you how many players or teams are involved.

(Update: I see that it's only double elimination tournaments that can't handle teams or FFAs... I'll keep experimenting.)

When you make a tournament it asks you how many players should be in each game. If you leave it at the default of 2, you'll get a 1v1. For an FFA, increase it.

Thank you! That option doesn't seem to exist for double elimination tournaments, however.

I've tried a round robin format, to see how it will be handled.

It seems there isn't really any documentation on this anywhere; at least, when creating the tournament, there is no way to see how it will look before it actually begins. I will report back on my round robin experiment, but it's slow as it requires all the players to join (unless it's possible to do so with dummy accounts somehow?).

And presumably there is no way to stop a tournament at all once it's under way? (Even voting to end is not an option, which makes sense, but makes it difficult, as all participants have to either surrender or get booted, each round.)

You can create a private tournament and look at the Settings of it. That way you can view the settings of the tournament without having to play any games on it.

Nope, but if you actually wanted the tournament to start you would only have to have 1 round in total for the entire tournament. If you enable "Practice game" on the template you used to make the tourney, all players can surrender on picks without hurting their stats.

Quite so!

But the Settings don't allow you to see what the Brackets will be like or how players will be assigned to rounds.

This is understandable; it would be a lot of work for little gain. But it makes figuring this out pretty complicated and annoying. (For instance, if you're doing a 6 player FFA, you'd probably need at least 12 players to make sure it works correctly, and it will take a long time for that many people just to join.)

Good point about a single round and setting it to "practice game"! However, with a single round some possibilities might not be testable (it can limit how many players can join).

I suppose I could try a 3-player FFA, that might be testable with just 6 players... still quite a few!

It does seem quite counter-intuitive for the tournament settings to override the template settings. The template already specifies how many players there should be per game. Why do you need to specify that again when creating the tournament?

For 3 players FFA with 2 rounds we need 9 players, with only 6 there will be only 2 winner on 2nd round.

DE is not compatible with FFA. Why? How does the bracket should be like? If you like to challenge yourself then try to make the bracket for 3 players FFA with 2 rounds (9 players) then if somehow you can do it make bracket for 4 players FFA with 3 rounds (64 players) etc.

Right, so perhaps it's impossible to construct FFA games in either a Double Elimination or a Round Robin tournament. A shame! (But understandable.)

I tried drafting a few by hand, and I can see why a double elimination tournament can't work with an FFA format. Thanks, mobtrio!

The Round Robin format probably has the same issue (it's trickier to work it out).

That would certainly explain it. I'll have to design my own tournament format!

Can anyone confirm that all double elimination and round robin tournaments will be 1 on 1 (as it seems must be the case)?
